Description

The TSB Bank at 100 Ferry Road, Edinburgh, dates to around 1870, with a substantial extension added in 1938 by Oldrieve, Bell & Paterson. It is a two-story corner building with dormers, situated on the corner of Ferry Road and North Fort Street; it occupies three bays on each street. The building originally served as a bank with residential accommodation situated above. It is designed in a plain classical style.

The exterior is constructed primarily of polished yellow sandstone, with a granite plinth, continuous string and blocking courses, and a projecting cornice. Aprons are located below the ground floor windows flanking the main entrance. A single-story extension to the east features a bowed front facing southeast, incorporating brick with an ashlar sandstone facing, a granite plinth, a string course, and a projecting blocking course. A pebble-dashed, flat-roofed extension is attached to the left of the entrance to number 100.

The southeast elevation (the main entrance) features an Ionic-columned doorpiece with an armorial panel set beneath a pediment. The entrance is flanked by a pair of timber panelled doors, leading to a two-leaf glazed vestibule. Above the door is decorative detailing, including dentils, egg and dart motifs, a polished oval panel, surrounding foliate decoration, and the entwined letters "ESB". A rectangular panel above the door is inscribed "NORTH LEITH BRANCH". A single window is located on the first floor, with a canted dormer above.

The south elevation (facing Ferry Road) shows a consoled doorpiece with foliate detailing and a projecting cornice to the central entrance, which is at number 100. The entrance has a panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight above. A projecting extension sits on the ground floor to the left. A single tripartite window is positioned within the bay to the right of the entrance, with an apron below, featuring an advanced centre and an inset architraved panel. Single windows are found on the first floor in the central and outer right bays; a bipartite window is in the outer left bay, with a canted dormer above.

The east elevation (North Fort Street) includes a projecting extension at ground level. The bowed corner has a single tripartite window facing southeast. Single windows are located to the ground floor in the remaining bays. A blind window is set into the first floor bay to the left of the central bays, alongside further single windows. A canted dormer is placed above the bay to the outer right.

First-floor windows are timber sash and case windows with four panes, while dormers feature two-pane timber sash and case windows. Ground floor windows are bronze with circular detailing and pyramidal bosses. The roof is grey slate, featuring Velux insertions on both elevations. A coped and rendered wallhead stack stands to the west, with a curvilinear wallhead stack to the east, containing a single circular can.

The interior was significantly altered during the 1938 extension when the North Fort Street extension was added, along with further management accommodation. Egg and dart detailing is present on the cornice work.
