Description

7 Madeira Place in Edinburgh is a two-storey and attic, seven-bay classical terrace building dating from around 1860. Originally a three-bay house, it has been converted to include two additional two-bay houses. The exterior features stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings, including a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are regularly spaced, with moulded architraves at the ground level, and the doors have rectangular fanlights, architraves, and cornices. The building also has canted piend-roofed dormers.

On the North Fort Street elevation, there are three bays to the left with a central door and a pair of canted dormers. To the right, there are four bays with a pair of doors at the center; the outer windows on the first floor break the cill course and feature wrought-iron window guards, along with a pair of dormers. A downpipe recess divides this section.

The Madeira Place elevation shows a three-bay gable made of coursed rubble, with the left bay containing a basement window and a blank first floor. To the left, there is a corniced doorway with a panelled door.

The rear elevations are made of rubble and feature projecting central bays, with a carved tablet located at No 18. The building has timber sash and case four-pane windows, with twelve-pane windows at the rear and gable. The roof is covered with grey slates and features broad coped ashlar stacks and ashlar coped mutual skews.

The walls include a low coursed stone front wall with ashlar saddleback coping, and a taller garden wall to Madeira Place with semi-circular coping.
