Gate-Lodge And Gate-Piers, St Catherine's House, 49 Howdenhall Road, Edinburgh

The gate-lodge at St Catherine's House, located at 49 Howdenhall Road in Edinburgh, is a picturesque structure dating from the early 19th century. It features an earlier single-storey Georgian lodge that has been altered and raised in a charming barge-boarded style, constructed from roughly squared, snecked, and stugged rubble above the wallhead. The building has a rectangular plan, is single storey with an attic, and presents an asymmetrical façade, highlighted by a single-storey projecting bay facing Howdenhall Road. There are later additions to the northeast and southeast.

The entrance elevation showcases a barge-boarded gable with a Serlian window from the original building at the ground level, and a round-arched window at the attic floor, featuring astragals above and plain plate glass below. To the left, there is a projecting entrance porch that is barge-boarded and gabletted. An untidy swept dormer addition is present on the northeast flank, and there is a single end stack on the southeast side. The associated gatepiers consist of four square-plan, corniced ashlar piers, one of which is damaged.
