Description
45-49 Forrest Road in Edinburgh is a four-storey and attic, five-bay tenement block designed in the Baronial style by William Urquart in 1872. The building features a mansard roof and shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of polished coursed ashlar, which is painted at the ground level. There is a continuous cornice above the ground floor shops, and the openings are roll-moulded and stop-chamfered.
A moulded string course runs between the second and third floors. On the right side, there are two shops with segmental-arched openings supported by Corinthian columns. The entrance to the flats has a timber panelled door with a plate glass fanlight in a segmental-arched surround at the centre, along with a short section of original brattishing on the outer left.
The outer right and left bays feature three-storey canted windows. Above the central segmental-arched window, there is a wallhead stack that is corbelled out on chequer-set machicolations, flanked by finialled gabled dormerheads that have trefoil panels breaking the eaves. The attic includes three timber dormers.
The windows predominantly have four-pane glazing and are made of timber sash and case. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a corniced wallhead stack with oblique corners.
