Description
8 Albany Street is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey classical terrace building with an attic and basement, featuring 15 bays. The exterior is made of polished ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and broached ashlar sandstone at the basement. It has a base course, a band course between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal and first floors, as well as a cill course at the first floor and a cornice with a blocking course at the first floor. The entrance has ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.
The south elevation consists of five three-bay houses, each with six-panel timber doors and a variety of plate glass and radial semicircular fanlights, alternating between the left and right houses. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows, while the upper floors feature regular fenestration with reeded aprons at the first floor and in the basement. There is a flagged basement area.
The west elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (6, 6B Albany Street), as does the east elevation (18-40 Albany Street).
The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof. There are polygonally piended dormers at Nos 8, 10, and 12, a pair of rectangular dormers at No 14, and a polygonally piended dormer along with a bow-fronted dormer at No 16. The cast-iron rainwater goods are complemented by a variety of rendered and broached ashlar ridge stacks, which are coped and have circular cans. The skews are also coped.
The interiors were not seen in 1998. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed and urn finials.
