Filling Station, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43 Causewayside, Edinburgh

This building is a filling station located at 35, 37, 39, 41, and 43 Causewayside in Edinburgh, designed by Basil Spence with technical engineering details by George Fraser, constructed between 1933 and 1934. It features an infill garage front in the International Modern style, with a white rendered concrete exterior.

The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, showcases deep cantilevers supported by a pair of stanchions that hold up the offices above the garage forecourt. The office front is set back slightly from the wall plane of the adjacent tenements. It includes full-length strip-glazing divided by two fins that correspond with the cantilevers, which break the eaves and support the original Art Deco sign that reads "Garage." Petrol pumps are situated on an island between the main stanchions, which were relocated in 1961.
