Warehouse, 88-90 Giles Street, Leith, Edinburgh

This building is a warehouse located at 88-90 Giles Street in Leith, Edinburgh, designed by Joseph Marr Johnston and dated 1903. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and basement, featuring a stripped Edwardian Baroque style. The building is constructed from red brick with cream ashlar dressings and has a steel beam framework. It includes a corner office block with ashlar bands every six courses on the ground floor and at the angled feature. The first floor windows are framed by band courses, and there are round-arched windows at the ground floor with ashlar voussoirs and a corniced impost course, while the first floor has small square windows. The mansard roof has modern Velux rooflights.

The northwest elevation, which is the principal facade, has five bays with a parapet where the three central bays are raised to three storeys. The chamfered centre bay features a round-arched raised entrance door with channelled ashlar ingoes, a moulded two-leaf door, and a semi-circular decorative iron grille fanlight dated with the year. The outer bays have broad round-arched windows at the ground floor above paired barred openings of a raised basement. The raised parapet of the central bays includes bull's-eye windows with distinctive raised keystones and an eaves cornice.

The southwest elevation also has five bays, with a doorway on the outer left featuring a tall segmental-arched barred fanlight. There is a partly recessed arched pend opening with a sliding track door to the left of centre, and tall windows in the right bays. The ground floor windows on the principal elevation retain original radial astragalled glazing over plate glass, while the warehouse bays have small-pane hopper windows, and modern windows are present on the upper levels. The roof is covered with purple slate and has a small wallhead stack on the southwest side.

Inside, there is a tiled vestibule, and the inner door is adorned with Ionic pilasters and a semi-circular stained glass fanlight featuring astragal petals.
