Description

99 Giles Street is a building in Edinburgh that consists of a rear block built before 1876, which incorporates an earlier 19th century warehouse, and a front block that dates from around 1890. The structure features a range of three-storey warehouses with a curved corner on the front block. The materials used include cream sandstone and coursed rubble with stugged dressings for the rear block, while the front block is made of squared and snecked rubble with stugged dressings.

The rear block, built before 1876, has seven bays and is slightly angled to the adjoining front block. It features a two-bay M-gabled northeast elevation, with the right gable slightly advanced. The ground floor has single windows that are blocked, and there is a bricked-up doorway after the fifth bay. The building formerly had dormers breaking the eaves, and the cills of former attic windows are visible at the eaves level. There are single windows on the north side, and the roof is covered with corrugated sheeting.

The front block, dating from around 1890, is a six-by-seven-bay corner block with two curved corner bays. It has smaller square windows on the second floor. The Giles Street elevation features a curved corner to the right, with a base course and a band course above the ground floor. There is a wide and tall depressed cart arch opening with stop-chamfered reveals and a moulded arch, leading to boarded timber doors. Additionally, there are two secondary doorways and single windows above. The southeast side, formerly known as Storries Alley, has single windows, but former openings above the ground floor are blocked. There are also single windows on the north side, and the slate roof sweeps over the curved corner.

The building has barred windows, some of which are blocked with stone or concrete, and features octagonal gutterheads. The interior was not seen in 1993.
