Description

Trafalgar Masonic Lodge, located at 1 St Anthony Lane in Edinburgh, was designed by George Craig in 1888. This building features a single-storey and attic front block with three bays, showcasing Tudor Gothic architectural details, alongside a single-storey hall with five bays. The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone, squared and snecked rubble, with polished red ashlar dressings.

The north elevation has a three-bay layout with a central doorway flanked by nook-shafts topped with Corinthian capitals and a keel-shaped arch. Above the doorway is a tympanum with a carved inscription, and the door itself is a two-leaf design with chevron boarding and paneling. The outer bays contain tripartite lancet windows set within arched panels that feature blind quatrefoils in the tympana, while the attic has windows adorned with Masonic symbols. At the wallhead, there is a deep recessed frieze decorated with carved Masonic symbols in roundels. A small arched opening is present on the outer right.

The east elevation, facing St Anthony Lane, has two gabled bays on the outer right with an apex stack, along with two small blocked windows at ground level and a single window above. The five-bay hall to the left has tripartite lancet windows in each bay.

The west elevation is gabled with an apex stack on the left, but the hall elevation is obscured by a neighboring building. The hall features small, square leaded panes in the lancets, while the front elevation has timber sash and case windows, with replacement windows in the attic. The roof is covered with slate and has crested red ridge tiles, along with two apex stacks. Corbelled skewputts are present, gabletted to the gable elevations.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
