Description
Playfair's Monument, located at the City Observatory on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, was designed by William Henry Playfair and constructed between 1825 and 1826. This square-plan memorial features a Greek Doric style and is made of polished ashlar stone. It has a projecting base plinth that supports a podium, which includes a projecting base course chamfered to the upper section. The monument is topped with a moulded cornice and a tetrastyle blind colonnade made up of engaged fluted Greek Doric columns. The entablature is decorated with metopes that are adorned with laurel wreaths, and it culminates in a pyramidal stone roof.
On the southeast elevation, the podium is inscribed with a dedication that translates to: "To John Playfair, the piety of friends, struck by faithful desires, where he himself had once dedicated a temple to his Urania, this monument was erected in 1826, born on the 6th of March 1748, died on the 14th of August 1819."
