49-51 Grange Road, Edinburgh

49-51 Grange Road is a villa built around 1863, with later additions. It is a 2-storey building originally designed with 3 bays, which was expanded to 5 bays shortly after construction through a sympathetic single-storey extension to the east and a two-storey extension to the west. The villa features squared and snecked sandstone rubble, lightly stugged ashlar with polished dressings on the south elevation, a base course, a blocking course, a cornice, quoin strips on the extensions, and rusticated quoins on the original house. The windows are architraved with bracketed cills, and there is a balustraded parapet with ashlar dies.

On the east elevation, there is a central doorpiece with pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course, leading to a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight above. There is a single window above the door and in the remaining bays, with an additional bay to the left that is slightly recessed. The west elevation features a forestair leading to a secondary entrance at the first floor. The east elevation includes a single-storey extension on the outer left and a two-storey service wing on the outer right.

The north elevation has an advanced service wing on the outer left with a small flat-roofed addition and a tripartite window at the first floor. There is a round-arched sash and case stair window in the centre and advanced bays on the outer right. The south elevation has 4-pane sash and case windows on the ground floor, while the first floor has uPVC replacement windows. There is a mixture of plate glass, 12-pane, and replacement sash and case windows elsewhere. The building has a flat roof and two wallhead stacks.

Inside number 49, the vestibule features a tripartite door with etched glass panels, decorative plaster mouldings, and an encaustic tiled floor.
