42 Lauder Road, Edinburgh

This building at 42 Lauder Road in Edinburgh is a villa dating from around 1869. It is two stories high and has a three-bay rectangular plan. The sides and rear are constructed of squared and snecked rubble, while the eastern elevation features ashlar stonework. Notable architectural details include a base course, a stone bracketed cornice, quoin strips, and raised window surrounds, which are segmental-arched on the first floor and have chamfered reveals.

The eastern entrance elevation showcases a central pilastered round-arched Venetian style doorpiece, supported by elaborately carved consoles and a bracketed segmental-arched canopy. Above the door is a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight, and there is a single window with a lugged surround above it. To the outer left, there is an advanced corniced tripartite window at ground floor level, with a single window above it also featuring a lugged surround. The outer right side has a full-height canted window with a dividing cornice.

On the southern elevation, there are single windows on both the ground and first floors. The villa has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof with lead flashing, and a dormer on the north side. There is also a small-pane box dormer connecting the southeast stack to the roof, along with four shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks, two of which are rendered on the south side, featuring moulded octagonal cans. A skylight is present on the south side.

The interior has not been seen since 1990. There is a low boundary wall along the street and a garage to the south.
