Description

Abbey Court House, located at Holyrood Abbey near Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, was primarily designed by Robert Reid between 1822 and 1823, with contributions from Robert Matheson in 1857, incorporating some elements from the 16th century. This two-storey, four-bay building features a crowstepped design and includes a circular, corbelled stairtower with a conical roof at the northeast corner. It is situated on the south side of the entrance to the Palace forecourt and is constructed of random rubble with droved and ashlar margins.

The tower has a flattened ogee-arch entrance that is fitted with a timber door, which is adorned with metal studs. The north elevation showcases four bays of pointed-arch blind arcading. There is an off-centre boarded timber door surrounded by a moulded door surround, and to the right, a large in-set panel displays the painted Arms of James V.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with grey slates, complemented by a coped gable and ridge stacks.

Inside, as observed in 2007, there is a stone turnpike stair at the entrance to the northeast, and some rooms contain moulded stone fire surrounds.
