Yard House, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh

Yard House, located at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, is a mid-19th century building that likely incorporates earlier elements. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure that originally served as a coachman's house. The house features a crow-stepped design with a corbelled turret topped by a pepperpot roof at the southeast corner. The exterior is constructed of rubble with raised ashlar margins and includes a rubble string course. The eastern entrance elevation has a central six-panelled timber door with a three-light fanlight above, framed by a corniced, moulded door surround. There are two flat-roofed dormers on the rear (west) side.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, and the building has coped gable stacks and cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the original room layout remains largely intact. There are some decorative cornices and marble fire surrounds, along with six-panel doors, some featuring carved doorheads. The staircase is tight and open-well, with cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail, and some working shutters are present.
