Description
134, 136, and 138 George Street in Edinburgh is a former classical tenement building dating from around 1785, with later alterations. The shopfront was modified by Henry & Maclennan in 1928, and a mansard roof was added slightly later. The building is three stories high, with a basement and attic, and features a seven-bay façade made of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings.
At the center, there is a set-back common stair bay with a corniced and architraved nine-panel door, which retains its channelled rustication. The ground floor has been altered on either side; to the east, there is a pilastered four-bay ashlar front that projects out, featuring a door to the right and a dentilled cornice. To the west, there is a channelled pilastered four-bay front with an applied doorway to the left, along with a cornice, parapet, and urn on the slightly projecting three right bays, with the area still surviving. The building has an eaves cornice and a later mansard attic that includes gabled dormers with segmental-headed windows in each bay. There are two flagpoles with three fixings above the eastern projection.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and twelve-pane windows survive in the eastern bays on the second floor. The roof is covered with grey slates.
Inside, the building has been converted for hotel use. Additionally, there are cast-iron spearhead railings leading to the steps and around the area.
