Description

The building at 14-20 Cowgate in Edinburgh, designed by Patrick Wilson in 1861, was originally a church and hall but is now a clinic. It features Gothic architecture with an octagonal entrance tower made of squared and snecked stugged ashlar. The entrance has a two-leaf timber boarded door with decorative cast-iron hinges, set within a hoodmoulded pointed-arched surround that is flanked by columns with stiff leaf capitals. The entrance tower includes angle buttresses and a hoodmoulded carved panel with carved labelstops. The square-plan vestibule rises to the octagonal tower, which has a lancet window at the first stage, louvred lancets on each side of the upper stage, and a pierced parapet. Behind the entrance, the pitch-roofed nave of the church is lit by tall windows with small leaded pane glazing. The gable end of the hall to the left has been altered at the ground floor, with two shoulder-arched windows that are blocked at the first floor, and a bipartite window in the gable.

The east elevation features a rubble-built east wall of the east transept, which shows two two-light windows with multifoils and a small window in the gable. The roof is covered with grey slates and has stone skews. The interior was not seen in 2000.
