Description
The Munro Free Church, located on Western Avenue in Rutherglen, Glasgow, was designed by Charles Wilson and completed in 1850. This building is in the Early Gothic style, featuring late Gothic elements in the upper parts of its tower. The church has an almost square nave with aisles beneath a single slate roof and a slender east tower that is embraced by the nave. It showcases tall lancet windows, particularly at the east end, which are adorned with dripmoulds.
The prominent tower includes polygonal clasping buttresses and blind panelling on the clock and bell stages. It is topped with an openwork parapet and tall crocketted pinnacles. The main doorway features a deeply moulded arch with shafts, and there is strapwork detail along with the date 1849 inscribed on the wooden tympanum. Original cast-iron railings are present only on the east side of the church. There is a small western projection that has three lancet windows arranged in echelon.
Attached to the southwest corner of the church is a small gabled stone house that has a polygonal extension and a rectangular window with a dripmould. Inside, the church boasts a good Gothic interior, with wooden galleries on three sides supported by cast-iron columns. The west end features a massive organ and pulpit. The galleries also have columns with rich stiff leaf capitals that support ribbed plaster vaults, which are quadripartite in the aisles and feature a higher tunnel vault in the centre. The church is fully furnished with box pews.
