Description

148 Ferry Road in Edinburgh is a pair of classical houses built around 1825. These two-storey and basement homes have a rectangular plan and form a terrace that is set back from the street, featuring a garden area in front. The exterior is finished in stugged grey ashlar with a rusticated ground floor and random rubble at the rear. Architectural details include a continuous base, string, cill, and blocking courses, along with a projecting cornice. Stone stairs lead to the entrances at ground level.

The southern entrance elevation of No. 146 has four bays. A timber panelled door is located in the bay to the right of the centre, with a plate glass fanlight above it. There is a single window in the outer right bay and single windows in the remaining bays to the left. The basement and first floor are regularly fenestrated. A tripartite pilastered dormer with a central pediment is situated in the outer left bay.

No. 148, also on the southern entrance elevation, has three bays. A timber panelled door is found in the outer right bay, accompanied by a plate glass fanlight above. The remaining bays to the left contain single windows. The basement and first floor also feature regular fenestration, with a skylight in the outer right bay.

The northern rear elevation consists of three bays, recessed in the outer left bay. All bays are regularly fenestrated at the basement, ground, and first floors. There are stairs leading to a single door in the central bay of No. 146, topped by a 6-light fanlight. A modern box dormer is present in the centre of No. 146, while a canted dormer is located in the outer right bay.

The windows on the southern elevation are 2-pane timber sash and case, while the northern elevation features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with 4-pane windows in the basement. The roof is covered in grey slate with raised stone skews, and there is a polished sandstone apex stack to the west and a ridge stack at the centre.

The boundary walls consist of a low random rubble wall at the front, topped with polished coping and replacement rails, and are broken in parts to allow for vehicular access.
