6 Industry Homes, Industry Lane, Edinburgh

These are an earlier to mid-19th century group of houses on Industry Lane, Edinburgh. The rectangular block, originally 13 bays wide with 8 bays at the rear, was later subdivided into 8 dwellings. Nos. 1-4 are first-floor flats accessed from the east side at ground level, while Nos. 5-8 are ground-floor flats accessed from the west side.

The exterior is constructed of tooled and pointed yellow rubble sandstone with polished margins. Openings are surrounded by long and short dressed stone, which is painted on Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7. Raised droved quoins define the corners. A feature of the rear (west) elevation are the single, narrow windows.

The east elevation, serving Nos. 1-4, has replacement two-leaf timber panelled doors in the penultimate bay from the outer left (No. 1), with single windows above. Nos 2 and 3 are similarly arranged, with centrally offset doors and matching windows. No. 4 has a door in the bay to the left of the outer right, again with windows above.

The west entrance elevation, facing Nos. 5-8, features replacement timber doors, some with opaque and louvred fanlights above. Single windows are set above the ground-floor entrances and continue along the elevation.

The windows are a mix of two- and four-pane timber sash and case styles, along with uPVC casements and part-opaque glazed timber casements. The roof is covered in graded grey slate, with raised skews, regularly placed rendered coped ridge and apex stacks topped with circular cans. Replacement rainwater goods have been installed. The interior was not inspected in 1996.
