Description

The property comprises a circa 1840 Italianate villa with attached stables, located at 171 Whitehouse Loan, Edinburgh. The villa is a two-and-a-half-story, symmetrical three-bay design, with single-story pavilion blocks projecting to the south and north, forming an H-plan. The exterior is finished with ochre harling and ashlar dressings, featuring a cill band course at ground floor level, quoin strips, raised window surrounds, and overhanging, bracketed timber eaves.

The north elevation, which serves as the main entrance, has three bays, incorporating the two advanced, piend-roofed pavilions. A central doorway bridges the pavilions, with a panelled door, plate glass fanlight, and a tripartite round-headed window above. Single windows are located within the bays of the pavilions to the outer left and right. A later window has been inserted under the main eaves to the right. The west elevation is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a corniced tripartite window at ground floor in the central bay, with a single window above. Single windows are also present in the bays of the pavilions to the outer left and right. The south elevation mirrors the north, with a balustrade leading to French windows set between the pavilions, and a tripartite round-headed window at the first floor above. A blinded window is located at the first floor to the outer left. The east elevation has four bays with single windows in the two central bays and in the bays of the pavilions.

The windows throughout are small-pane sash and case. The roof is grey slate, piended, with shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks and moulded octagonal cans. The interior was not inspected in 1991.

The stables are a single-story block with an attic, situated to the southeast of the main house. They are constructed of pink sandstone with red sandstone dressings. The west elevation features carriage entrances with sliding doors, two gabled bipartite windows in the attic, and a box dormer between the gables. The south elevation has a ground-floor window and a bowed, five-light window in the gablehead. The west elevation exhibits irregular fenestration, with a central gabled bay and a box dormer to the right, and small-pane sash and case windows. The roof is grey-green slate with terracotta ridging, an ogre-roofed ventilator, and corniced gablehead stacks.

Gatepiers and boundary walls mark the property. There are two pedestrian gateways to Whitehouse Loan and one carriage gateway to Whitehouse Terrace, supported by six corniced and capped ashlar gatepiers. A low coped boundary wall fronts the house along the street, with a higher coped rubble boundary and mutual walls elsewhere. A small summerhouse is located to the southeast. A fluted street lamp, inscribed "Sidney Place," is set within the boundary wall to the west.
