Description
Gogar Bank House, located on Gogar Station Road in Edinburgh, is a Classical house built in the later 18th and early 19th centuries. It is a two-storey building over a raised basement, featuring a six-bay near symmetrical design. The central block, which is three bays wide, dates from the later 18th century and is flanked by taller two-storey bows added shortly after, with rear two-storey projections creating a U-plan that includes single-storey service bays. The structure is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble with polished sandstone margins, some harl-pointing, raised quoins, an eaves band, and a moulded cornice. A decorative greenhouse from the late 19th century is also present.
The main southeast elevation showcases the original three-bay block with the taller flanking bows and an outer left bay over the raised basement. The central entrance is accessed by a plain stair and platt, featuring a Doric doorpiece and simple cast iron balusters. The windows are regularly arranged, and the elevation is topped with a parapet and a fluted urn over the central bay. The flanking bows are slightly advanced, while the outer bay to the left is plain. The greenhouse is attached to the west return.
On the rear northwest elevation, there is a base course and a substantial two-storey service block on the outer left, built of rubble with sandstone margins and a piend and platformed roof. This elevation includes a kitchen court with barred windows and a pointed window against the northern enclosing wall. A stair bay is centrally located, featuring a large stair window, with a narrow bay recessed to the right and a sandstone flat-roofed addition to the left. There is also a two-storey, two-bay jamb on the outer left with regularly disposed windows and a small window between the ground floor windows.
The northeast elevation consists of three bays with blind windows, a first-floor plate glass window at the center, and the outer left bay is slightly recessed and finished with quoins. The main elevation features plate glass sash and case windows, while the rear has 12-pane sash and case windows. The roof is a piend and platform slate roof with corniced sandstone stacks topped with octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1992. The greenhouse, built against the west return, features a central gabled entrance, a thistle motif cresting, and ornate finials.
