Description

Newington Old Burial Ground, established in 1820, is an L-plan burial ground located at 31 East Preston Street, Edinburgh. The main entrance features original cast-iron carriage gates and tall droved ashlar gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps, along with a pedestrian gateway and cast-iron gate to the right. The burial ground is enclosed by high rubble walls, with railings at the northeast corner adjacent to East Preston Street and Dalkeith Road.

Within the grounds, there are wall monuments and free-standing stones, primarily in the Greek Revival style, as well as Tudor-style burial enclosures along the external walls. Notable decorative enclosures to the north of the watchtower contain the graves of John Scott, who died in 1829, and Hugh Handyside, who died in 1833. Additionally, there is an iron railing mortsafe enclosure on the south wall for the grave of Rev. William Limont, who died in 1833.

The watchtower, also dated 1820, is a two-stage, circular-plan structure that is corbelled and castellated, featuring an external staircase set within the re-entrant angle of the boundary walls. It has a doorway at ground level, two single windows, and an additional doorway on the first floor.
