Description

The building at 15 and 17 Salisbury Road in Edinburgh, dating from around 1825, is a two-storey, three-bay classical house with a single-storey wing attached to the west. It is constructed of lightly stugged cream sandstone ashlar, with polished ashlar used for the central bay and dressings, while the sides, basement, and rear are made of rubble. The design features a base course, a dividing band course, and a cill course for the first-floor windows. The ground floor windows have advanced cills, and there are blind balustrades on the aprons of the first-floor windows in the outer bays. A cast-iron balcony is present above the central first-floor window, along with a cornice and a blocking course that is raised at the center and at the terminal dies.

On the south (entrance) elevation, the central bay is advanced and includes a segmental-arched, recessed doorway with a panelled door and an umbrella fanlight. This is flanked by ionic columns and a cornice in antis. There is a single recessed window above the balcony, with additional single windows in the outer bays. The single-storey wing features a panelled door with a pedimented doorpiece.

The windows are timber, sash and case, with plate glass, and there are French windows leading to the first-floor central balcony. The roof is a grey slate piended design, with coped wallhead stacks that are coursed to the east and rendered to the west, featuring moulded cans.

The boundary walls, gatepiers, and carriage gate are later Victorian additions. The low, coursed boundary walls extend to the street, with tapering, panelled piers topped with decorative cast-iron finials for the gates and boundary wall, which is continuous with No 21. There is also a decorative cast-iron bracket on the mutual gatepier with No 21, along with replacement railings and a carriage gate next to the house on the east.
