Description

This building, located at 2 and 2A Salisbury Road in Edinburgh, dates back to 1806 with later additions. It is a two-storey, five-bay classical house that has a near symmetrical design. There is a single-storey wing attached to the west and a non-traditional single-storey extension on the east.

The structure is primarily made of cream sandstone coursed rubble, featuring ashlar dressings on the main and west elevations, as well as part of the rear elevation to the west, with rubble used elsewhere. It has a base course, advanced cills on the ground floor windows, and a cill course for the first-floor windows.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there are recessed, round-arched doorways in the advanced penultimate bays. To the right, there is a tripartite doorway with a panelled door and an umbrella fanlight, along with a single window above. To the left, a doorway is partially blocked to accommodate a modern glass-panelled door and an enlarged window above. The remaining bays feature regular fenestration on both floors, and there is a box dormer to the right. The single-storey wing on the west has a door on the outer right and two windows to the left.

The south elevation includes a doorway on the penultimate right with a modern cast-iron porch, a stair window between the floors above, and a full-height, three-light painted, canted window to the right, with single windows in the remaining bays. There is a bowed dormer on the left.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with plate glass in the canted bay and a 6-pane enlarged window. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piended design, along with corniced wallhead and ridge stacks.

Additionally, there are two pairs of tall, square-section, corniced gatepiers at the east and west ends of the high boundary wall.
