Gate-Piers And Pedestrian Gate, Boundary Walls, Southwick House, 21, 21A Salisbury Road, Edinburgh

Southwick House, located at 21 and 21A Salisbury Road in Edinburgh, dates from around 1825. This is a two-storey and basement, three-bay, symmetrical classical house with a single-storey wing to the east and later irregular projections at the rear. The exterior features lightly stugged, cream sandstone ashlar, with rubble on the sides and basement. Architectural details include a base course, a dividing band course, a cill course for the first-floor windows, a cornice, and a blocking course that is raised at the center and at the terminal dies. The first floor is adorned with cast-iron window guards featuring anthemion and palmette designs.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there is a segmental-arched, recessed central doorway with a panelled door and an umbrella fanlight, flanked by ionic columns and a cornice. Above the doorway, there is a single window, with additional single windows in the outer bays on the left and right, as well as in the basement. The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate piended roof, coped wallhead stacks, and moulded cans.

The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary walls, gatepiers, and pedestrian gate are later Victorian additions, featuring low, coursed boundary walls along the street, tapering panelled piers with decorative cast-iron finials for the gates, and a decorative cast-iron bracket connecting to the mutual gatepier with No 17. There are replacement railings and a pedestrian gate to the west.
