Description

19-20 Princes Street is a hotel building designed by J MacIntyre Henry, constructed between 1896 and 1898. It is a four-storey structure with a double attic, featuring a broad three-bay façade made of polished cream sandstone ashlar. The modern ground floor includes a shopfront that incorporates the entrance to the hotel on the west side. The two eastern bays have large bowed tripartite windows on the first and second floors, which are accented by mullions and polished granite columns on the first floor and fluted pilasters on the second floor. These windows are connected by a shaped balcony on the third floor, which also features paired arcaded windows. The building is topped with a cornice and a solid parapet that is interrupted by ashlar bipartite dormers with Dutch gables and a wallhead stack in between, along with four pedimented timber dormers above.

On the west side, there is a five-storey tower bay that includes an arched window on the first floor, a bipartite window on the second, an aedicule on the third, and three small arched windows on the fourth. The tower is capped with a heavy cornice that has a pulvinated frieze and a pavilion roof featuring a pedimented timber dormer. Ornamental carved panels are present between the first and second floors.

The interior includes a staircase with timber balusters and a simple panelled ceiling, although the cupola is obscured. The interior has been modernised otherwise. The building extends westward into Nos 21-23 Princes Street, which is listed separately.
