Description
Warriston House is a mid-18th century farmhouse, originally three storeys and three bays in plan, with additions at the rear dating to the early 19th century. The house is situated on a gentle slope to the east and is constructed of harled rubble with ashlar sandstone margins and dressings. Stugged quoins are present, and window reveals are chamfered. Second-floor windows are directly beneath the eaves.
The west elevation presents a near-symmetrical facade, with widely spaced bays. A central doorway features an early 19th century sandstone ashlar doorpiece with cornicing and pilasters framing a segmental arch. A deep-set four-panelled door is fitted with an Edinburgh handle, with its upper corners concealed by the arch. An oculus is positioned to the right of the door, and a small window is to the left. There's evidence of a blocked opening immediately to the right of the door. Windows are arranged symmetrically above at the first and second floors. The outer bays have first and second-floor windows which are blind, painted to match the other windows. Tall, coped wallhead stacks rise directly above the second-floor windows. A blocked opening is visible between the centre and outer right window. A larger, modern four-pane top-hopper window is located at the ground floor in the outer left bay, with evidence suggesting a blocked opening to its left. A stugged sandstone buttress with slab coping extends almost to the level of the second-floor cill on the outer right.
The north elevation has an 'M' shape, with the left gable being lower. A blocked opening is at ground level on the main gable, which has windows on the first and second floors. A lower, blank gable to the left has a blocked opening at ground level right, as well as modern flue and heating equipment. Single-storey, lean-to rubble sheds with pantiled roofs adjoin the north garden wall to the east.
The east elevation features a full-height, half-piended roofed projection off-centre to the right, including a landing window on the east-facing elevation. A window is visible at ground level on the return. A lower, lean-to gable is on the outer right, with a glazed door at ground level to the south, and a window on the first floor. The windows are arranged in a near-symmetrical pattern over two bays, with those in the outer left bay being larger, and the principal floor window the largest of all. The window of the penultimate bay is set immediately to the left of the jamb, and the ground floor window is not aligned with the windows on the upper floors.
The south elevation has a gable with windows off-centre at the principal and second floors, with the upper window being smaller.
The windows are predominantly four-pane plate glass sash and case, with 12-pane sash and case windows for the rear projection. The roof is gabled and covered in grey slate. Tall rubble coped wallhead stacks are at the west elevation, while a squared coped apex stack is on the south and north sides, with a brick apex stack on the lower north gable. Ashlar coping is present on the skews.
The interior was not inspected in November 1992.
A high rubble boundary wall with slab coping encloses the garden and house to the east and north.
