Description
Rogerson Boarding House, located at Merchiston Castle School on Colinton Road in Edinburgh, is a two-storey, nine-bay building constructed in 1928 by W J Walker Todd. This U-shaped boarding house is designed in an early Scottish classical style and features an attic with a piended roof. The outer bays are advanced, and the ground floor has large windows set in recessed arches, with an entablature supported by pilasters and decorative stonework in the tympanum.
The central entrance is a pilastered doorway with scrolled carved stonework flanking a window above. There are semi-octagonal stair towers on the side elevations. The building is harled with sandstone dressings, including a base course, a projecting cornice above the first floor, and an eaves course. The main elevations have lintels with projecting keystones, and some parts of the side and rear elevations feature a cill course. The regular fenestration includes piend-roofed dormers in the attic.
On the principal elevation, three stone steps lead to the central door, which has a pilastered entrance with an entablature and a plain tablet above. Above the door is an architraved window flanked by scrolls. The side elevations feature a three-sided canted bay at the center, with a door to the basement and staircase windows above. An oculus window is present at the first floor, along with small rectangular windows in the attic. The right and left sections are regularly fenestrated with three bays. The southern wing is slightly lower, featuring a central door with a tabbed architrave and a simple canopy, along with a blind architraved tablet above and flanking windows on both floors.
The rear elevation has a regularly fenestrated three-storey block at the center, with three-storey and attic advanced outer bays that include timber doors at the ground level and piend-roofed dormers in the attic. The windows throughout the building feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with a 9-pane circular window and two- and three-pane lights in the canted bays. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes ridge tiles and lead flashings. Buff painted cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative metal hoppers and enclosed gutters are installed across the attic windows, and there are some roof lights in the lower rear wing. The chimney stacks are harled with ashlar copes and feature short clay cans.
The interior of Rogerson Boarding House is currently in use as accommodation for boys boarding at the school.
