Description

1 and 3 Niddry Street is a former bank building, designed by W J Walker Todd in 1923. This three-storey structure, with a recessed attic storey, features a monumental Classical style and occupies a prominent corner site. The principal elevation faces High Street to the north, while the other elevations are oriented towards Niddry Street to the east and South Bridge to the west. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with channelled rustication at the ground level and outer pilasters on the west side, while the east side is made of rubble. It has a tall, moulded polished granite base course, a raised band course, a cill course, a deep cornice, and a blocking course. The attic storey is adorned with a Greek-key cornice course. The ground floor has deep-set windows, and the upper storey windows feature raised, moulded architraves, with cornicing at the first storey and keystones at the attic level. The second storey windows have carved decorative cills.

The principal elevation to the north includes a giant fluted Roman Doric tetrastyle portico with a pediment, which rises through the first and second storeys and is topped with a balustraded balcony. The tympanum of the portico displays a decorative, monogrammed carved stone emblem.

On the west elevation, there is an off-centre moulded doorpiece with a corbelled cornice and glass and timber swing entrance doors. The central bay is flanked by Doric pilasters that extend through the first and second storeys.

The building predominantly features metal casement windows with a multi-pane glazing pattern, and it has a piended copper roof with antefixae and tall, coped wallhead stacks.

Inside, as of 2007, the interior has been substantially altered, though some original features remain. It retains a tight open-well staircase with metal balustrades and a timber banister, along with some two-panel timber doors set in round-arched doorways.
