Description

4, 5, 6 South Bridge in Edinburgh is a Classical tenement building, primarily designed by Robert Kay around 1790 and refronted between 1860 and 1870. It stands three stories tall and has seven bays, with its main facade facing west towards South Bridge. The ground floor has been altered for commercial use. The building features painted ashlar stone with contrasting painted margins. The window openings have raised, key-stoned shouldered architraves, with carved heads on the keystones. There are string courses, a cill course, and a bracketed cornice.

At the rear, there is a three-window pedimented wallhead gable, which is flanked by later piended dormers. The west elevation predominantly has two-over-four pane timber sash and case windows, while the east elevation features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates. Additionally, there is access to vaults located below street level.
