Description
This is a three-storey and attic, five-bay terraced tenement on Dublin Street, Edinburgh, built in 1809 by William Cuthbertson and James Dobson, with alterations in the later 19th century. The building is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone. The basement has been built out to form a shop front on the left-hand side. A two-bay gable is centrally positioned at the wallhead. Architectural details include a band course between the basement and principal floor, projecting window cills to the first, second, third and attic floors, a dentilled cornice and blocking course at the third floor, and raised long and short quoins. Ashlar steps and entrance platts project from the eastern elevation.
The north (principal) elevation features a pilastered shop front, added in the later 19th century, spanning the bays at principal floor level. The shop front is ornamented with scrolled brackets and a mutuled cornice. A recessed glazed door is centrally placed, with geometric plate glass windows in the remaining bays. Regular sash windows are arranged above, grouped 1-2-2. A gable with a stack is situated at the wallhead over the centre and penultimate left bays.
The eastern (Dublin Street) elevation comprises seven bays, with a four-bay gable to the right and a three-bay terrace to the left. Pilastered doorpieces are present in the third and fourth bays from the left and the penultimate bay from the right, each adorned with a cornice. A panelled timber common stair door incorporates a blind rectangular fanlight in the fourth bay from the right. The remaining doorpieces have nine-panel timber doors with plate glass rectangular fanlights. Windows are positioned in the remaining bays at principal floor level. The fenestration is regular on the upper floors and in the basement, with the cills lowered in the three bays to the left at the first floor level.
The south elevation adjoins a terrace and is covered by a separate listing. The west elevation also adjoins a terrace and is covered by a separate listing.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Decorative window guards are present in three bays to the left at the first floor level and two bays to the right at the attic level on the eastern elevation. Grey slate roofs are topped by two-bay rectangular dormers on the right and a box dormer on the left. An additional box dormer is on the right and a recessed rectangular dormer is on the left, both at the eastern elevation. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted. The broached ashlar gablehead and ridge stacks are coped with circular cans.
The interiors were not inspected, though there is some evidence of working panelled shutters.
Ashlar copes are surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. A cast-iron railing-mounted lamp is also present.
