Description

This is a large, three- and four-storey, 14-bay terraced tenement, built in 1807 by William Cuthbertson and James Dobson. It is located on Abercromby Place in Edinburgh, and sits on a basement level. The building is slightly stepped at its centre, featuring a recessed bay four windows from the right. The exterior is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor level. Horizontal bands of stone mark the divisions between the basement and principal floor, and between the principal floor and the first floor. There is a cill course at the first floor level, projecting cills at the second floor level, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course at the second floor level. Ashlar steps and entrance platts overhang the basement.

The main (north) elevation features panelled timber doors to the common stair in the fourth bays from the left and right. These doors are flanked by pairs of round-arched recesses containing timber doors with plate glass fanlights above. The ground floor windows are regularly placed. The fenestration is consistent across the floors above and into the basement, although there are blind windows to the outer right and penultimate bay from the right when viewed from the second floor.

The west elevation has a three-bay gable with regular window placement, while the east elevation abuts a terrace building which is separately listed.

The roof is covered in grey slate and built out at the attic level to span the central six bays. Dormers are positioned to the outer right, in the third bay from the right, with a bowed design, and to the left, featuring an advanced canted dormer. There are also dormers in the third bay from the left and at the outer left. The roof has rubble ridge and gablehead stacks, with broached ashlar quoins and a rendered ridge stack, topped with circular cans. Ashlar skew copes finish the rooflines.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case windows with two panes to each sash.

Interior work was not inspected in 1997, but evidence of working panelled shutters exists. The principal floor and basement of number 2 were refurbished in 1898-9 by John Kinross, which included the installation of reinforced concrete floors, a marble entrance floor, a wider balustraded staircase, decorative plasterwork, and classical reliefs.

Cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials sit atop ashlar copes. A cast-iron lamp with a glass globe is affixed to the railings.
