Heart Of Midlothian War Memorial, Haymarket, Edinburgh

The Heart of Midlothian War Memorial, designed by Harry Snell Gamley between 1921 and 1922, is located at Haymarket in Edinburgh. This war memorial features a moulded rectangular-section pedestal and a chamfered, corniced ashlar shaft. The east and west faces are round-arched and hold a clock, with decorative panels below. At the top, there is a squat obelisk resting on a base above an extended pedestal and plinth.

On the east face, there is a long panel below the clock, framed at the top and sides by a stylised wreath. This panel features a bronze plaque dedicated to casualties from 1914 to 1919, located at the bottom centre. The corners are chamfered and adorned with lions' heads holding laurel wreaths at the level of the clock. Below this, there are five tablets, each carved with the name of a famous battle.

The west face mirrors the east face but is plain below the clock, featuring a plaque dedicated to casualties from 1939 to 1945. The north and south faces of the memorial are plain and much narrower.
