Description

Baxter's Close, located at 475 and 479 Lawnmarket in Edinburgh, is a narrow four-storey, three-bay tenement built in 1890 by Peter Henderson, which incorporates elements from the 17th century. The building features coursed bull-faced sandstone with red sandstone dressings and showcases 17th century Scots detailing. The openings have roll-moulded surrounds, and there is a moulded string course between the ground and first floors that steps up over a plaque on the right. A moulded corbel course is present between the second and third floors.

Access to the first-floor flats is provided by an earlier narrow stone forestair with cast-iron railings, located below a corbelled angle on the outer right, leading to a flat-arched pend that serves as the entrance to Lady Stair's Close. There is a narrow window to the right, which lights the stair, and above it, a narrow steeply gabled dormer-headed window. The decorative crow-stepped gable is visible on the two bays to the left, with narrower windows on the right.

On the rear elevation, there is a round-arched pend to the left, with single windows above it on the first, second, and third floors. To the right, there is a flat-roofed, three-storey rubble-built block. The building features plate glass in timber sash and case windows, while the shop has modern glazing.
