Description
2 Barnton Avenue West in Edinburgh features Tudor gatepiers designed by David Hamilton around 1810, originally part of the former Barnton House, which has since been demolished and replaced with housing in 1982 by W & J R Watson. The gatepiers consist of a pair of pointed-arched, four-columned piers that flank the entry, accompanied by a curved corner wall to the left and a single octagonal pier facing Barnton Avenue West. The structure is made of polished yellow sandstone and has a droved sandstone wall.
On the west elevation, there are two piers with double engaged octagonal columns on either side of an architraved arch. Each facet features architraved panelling, projecting base courses, and carved foliate decoration on the friezes, topped with crenellation between the columns. The cast-iron gates are currently missing.
The wall includes round-arched arrow slits placed at intervals along the curved wall facing the street, with a projecting base course and a roll-moulded cornice.
On the north elevation, there is a single octagonal pier to the left of the wall, with round-arched arrow slits on each facet. It has a chamfered plinth, an architraved capital adorned with sculpted foliate panels on each facet, and is topped with geometric crenellation.
