Description
The Scientific Block, designed by Auldjo Jamieson and Arnott in 1929, is a single-storey, 15-bay hospital building featuring an I-plan symmetrical layout in a simple modern neo-Georgian style. The exterior is harled with artificial stone dressings and details, and it is situated on level ground within the centre of lawned and wooded hospital grounds. Notable architectural features include distinctive short Doric columns that flank the porch and are positioned between the bays of the central section, showcasing incised scalloped detailing at both the base and capital. The building has a base course and eaves course, and it primarily features non-traditional large pane glazing in UPVC windows, topped by a red tiled roof.
Inside, the block has a straightforward functional interior from the 1920s, which retains its original layout as observed in 2014. This includes a terrazzo floor and timber doors, along with a marble dedication plaque in the hall.
