Description
South Lodge is a pair of two-storey, two-bay neo-Georgian gatelodges built between 1930 and 1932 by Auldjo Jamieson and Arnott, with ironwork by Thomas Hadden. The lodges are diagonally set and connected by curving walls that feature late 17th century style gatepiers and railings. They are constructed from cream squared and snecked rubble sandstone, accented with ashlar dressings. The design includes a base course, eaves course, rusticated quoins, and architraves around the doors, while the windows have plain architraves.
The timber sash and case windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing. The roofs are pyramidal and covered with grey pantiles, featuring swept overhanging eaves and central corniced stacks with chamfered angles.
Inside, the lodges have well-preserved late 19th century interiors, as observed in 2014, which include timber panelled doors and timber chimneypieces.
The gatepiers are square and rusticated, topped with moulded copes and garlanded urn finials. The railings display thistle, acorn, and lily motifs, and there were ornamental iron gates that are no longer in place.
