Description

2, 4, 6 Pilrig Street is a classical corner tenement building constructed in 1810 by builder David Sutherland. This three-storey structure, which includes an attic and basement, features a distinctive bowed corner bay and has two bays facing Pilrig Place, with five bays on the main elevation. The exterior is made of sandstone ashlar, with rusticated stonework at the ground level and a rock-faced basement. It includes a base course, a band course between the floors, a cill band at the first floor, projecting cills at the third floor, and corniced eaves. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the principal elevation facing Pilrig Street, the outer left features a bowed bay with windows on each floor and a large drum dormer topped with a tripartite window. The entrance consists of a timber panelled door set within a pilastered and corniced surround, complete with a round-arched fanlight. There are windows in two bays to the left and right, with regular fenestration above. For symmetry, the bay to the left is blinded, and there is a box dormer above it, along with a canted window in the curved dormer to the right.

The elevation facing Pilrig Place has a timber panelled door with a fanlight to the left at ground level, with a window in the bay to the right. The upper floors feature regular fenestration, with the bay to the right also blinded for symmetry, and a piended dormer above.

The building is fitted with timber sash and case windows, featuring 12-pane and plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with grey slates, and it has stacks with terracotta cans. The property is enclosed by cast-iron railings topped with fleur-de-lys finials. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
