Description
33 Newington Road in Edinburgh is a single-storey classical bank building designed by W J Walker Todd in 1932, located on a corner site. The building features a four-bay facade facing Newington Road and a single bay on East Newington Place, with a doorway positioned at the angled southwest corner. It is constructed from cream sandstone polished ashlar, with a polished granite base course, cills, and doorpiece. The design includes a fluted frieze with a central, plain, circular motif between the window openings and a panel inscribed with the street number above the door. A cornice runs along the top, and there are carved lion heads between the window openings on the band course above. The building has a plain parapet with a blank inscription panel situated above the doorway.
On the west elevation facing Newington Road, there are four recessed tripartite windows. The south elevation on East Newington Place features a central recessed tripartite window. The southwest corner includes a central doorway with a two-leaf panelled door, framed by a polished granite architrave and topped with a bronze hoodmould. The building also has steel pivot windows with border glazing and a flat roof.
