39 Newington Road, Edinburgh

4 East Newington Place is a classical tenement block built around 1810, featuring three storeys with a raised basement and a near symmetrical facade with 23 bays. The building is constructed from cream sandstone ashlar, with rusticated stonework at the ground level and coursed rubble on the sides and rear. It has a base course, a band course, and a cill course for the first-floor windows. The windows on the first and second floors are adorned with architraves, and there is a cornice and blocking course at the top. In front of the building, there are later detached shops, except for Nos 55 and 57.

On the west elevation facing Newington Road, there are doorways in bays 4, 6, 11, 13, 16, 19, and 21, featuring panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The fenestration includes windows between the doors, as well as to the basements and upper floors. The north elevation on East Newington Place has a central doorway with a boarded door and a plate glass fanlight, alongside a modern double doorway with glass panelled folding doors to the right, and single windows on all three floors to the left of centre.

The east elevation displays regular fenestration and features two cast-iron window guards on the first floor of 4 East Newington Place. The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some plate glass on the ground floor. The roof is made of grey slate and features a coped ridge and wallhead stacks with moulded cans. Original railings are present along the street, as well as a mutual boundary wall and steps at Nos 55-57.
