Description

42 High Road is a house from the earlier to mid 19th century, featuring a single storey with a basement and attic. It has a three-bay layout and showcases classical architectural details, positioned on a sloping site. The exterior is made of whitewashed coursed rubble sandstone with raised, painted margins. Notable features include a raised band course at the principal floor, a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, and a painted blocking course. The building has pilastered quoins, stugged long and short surrounds to the openings, engaged balusters beneath the ground floor windows, and projecting cills to the basement.

On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there is a centrally located two-leaf timber panelled door with a plate-glass fanlight above. The door is framed by flanking pilasters and an armorial panel set in a pediment, with stylised parapet detailing on either side. There are single windows flanking the entrance at ground level, with engaged balusters beneath decorative cills, and segmental-arched windows in the basement. Above, there are three-light canted dormers.

The northeast (rear) elevation features a boarded timber porch at the basement, offset to the left of centre, with a single window to the right. Segmental-arched windows are located in the outer bays. A large stair window is positioned at the centre, with a single window in the outer left bay and a three-light canted window in the outer right bay, both of which have three-light canted dormers above.

The ground floor at the front has 12-pane timber lying-pane glazing, while the rear has a 24-pane lying-pane stair window. The remaining openings feature 2-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has raised stone skews, along with replacement rainwater goods. There is a corniced apex stack on the northwest side, though it is missing.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary walls surrounding the site are made of random rubble with round-arched coping and enclose the front and rear. There is a cast-iron pedestrian entry gate.
