Description

17-19 Clyde Street West in Helensburgh is a three-storey and attic Glasgow style tenement built in 1909 by T and J Low. It features three bays and Art Nouveau details, with shops located on the ground floor. The building is constructed from bull-faced snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings. Notable architectural elements include a string course at the first floor, cill courses, and raised moulded quoin corbels at the first floor, which originally contained a downpipe, as well as overhanging eaves.

On the south elevation facing Clyde Street, there is a pend entrance at the center with two-leaf panelled fanlit doors, panelled ingoes, and an iron gate leading to the porch. Above the entrance, a timber tympanum displays a cartouche bearing the number of the tenement. To the right, there is a 19th-century shop front with a timber fascia and awning, while to the left is a modern shop front that is less desirable. A string course curves above the pend entrance, and a date stone is set in a bold keystoned rectangular panel between the first and second floors. Full-height bowed tripartite oriels flank the entrance, which are corbelled and corniced at the first floor, featuring a corbelled stepped bowed parapet that breaks the eaves.

The building has modern replacement uPVC windows, a grey slate roof with ashlar coped skews, and sandstone coped stacks at the gables. There is also a modern dormer on the south side.
