Description
Breachacha Steading and Farmhouse is likely from the early 18th century, with additions from the 19th century and later. It features a U-plan steading with a two-storey house in the middle of the central range and symmetrical, three-bay pavilions with piended roofs at the ends of the side ranges. The main elevation faces north, and there is a later wing to the east that encloses a courtyard. To the south, there is a range of roofless buildings that once housed cattle pens. The structure is built from squared rubble masonry with large, rough-hewn quoins.
The two-storey, nine-bay north elevation is symmetrical and classically proportioned. It has three advanced bays with segmental arched recesses, narrow voussoirs, and crenellated wallheads, along with a circular plaque and a pyramidal belfry at the center. A later screen wall extends to the left, featuring a matching advanced end bay. To the west, there is a single-storey range with a two-storey, three-bay farmhouse at the center, flanked by ranges that end in symmetrical two-storey, three-bay pavilions with piended roofs and large central arched recesses. The south courtyard range has a deep sloping roof, a five-bay open cart shed, and a stone forestair leading to the upper floor.
The building includes modern timber windows and timber-boarded doors. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate, with some sections newly slated and corrugated roofing on the east range. There are also cast-iron and modern rooflights.
