Description
Home Farm at Archerfield is an adaptation from the earlier to mid 19th century of a previous steading, with part of the east range converted in the 20th century. It is designed in a U-plan layout, featuring cattle courts at the northern rear and a two-storey former farmhouse at the southern end of the east range, which was raised from a single storey.
The building is constructed from random rubble with ashlar dressings. The facades are ashlar coped and crenellated, with a band course that closes the east and west ranges to the south, creating a break in the eaves.
The west and north ranges contain stables and stores, with some openings blocked. There is a large garage opening at the eastern end of the north range, located at the re-entrant angle.
The east range has been made residential. On the west elevation, there is a former carriage opening to the outer left with French doors, flanked by a single window to the right. To the left of center, there are two fanlit former doors that have been glazed as windows. The southern end features a three-bay, two-storey factor's house, with altered ground floor openings and three regular first-floor windows.
The courtyard formed by the two-storey bays is coped and made of rubble. The east elevation includes two single-storey, piend roofed projections at the center and outer right, which are incorporated into the residential accommodation. The southern projection has a pentice roofed porch in the re-entrant angle to the south. There are three ground floor windows in the two-storey house and two first-floor windows in the outer bays.
At the center of the U-plan court is a barn with a gable to the south, featuring a machinery doorway and ramp. The gable has crowsteps with consoled skewputts and a blind cross at the gable head, though the former finial is missing.
The east and west elevations of the barn have a doorway at the center flanked by two small openings. There are segmentally arched, low openings that are currently blocked at the outer ends. Cement covers the rubble platforms adjoining each side, running the full length of the barn.
The windows feature 12-pane glazing in sash and case style, along with some modern windows with plate glass. The roofs are made of pantiles, with slate easing courses at intervals, and there are brick stacks present.
