Description

Breachacha House is a 1750 Gothick-Baronial castle located on the island of Coll, with additions and alterations made in 1856 and later. The building features four storeys and three bays, with a symmetrical square plan and a piended roof. It is connected to two-storey, three-bay pavilions by quadrant walls that have blind Venetian windows. The exterior includes crenellated wallheads, corner bartizans, and a floral plaque on the central raised section of the south parapet. A later 19th-century red sandstone gabled porch on the north side has corner bartizans and ball stone finials. The walls are rendered rubble with raised ashlar quoins on the main south elevation and margined quoins at the rear. The window surrounds are margined, and the south door has a moulded surround.

The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is grey slate with leaded flat sections, and there are corniced rectangular ashlar stacks with plain clay cans. The rainwater goods are cast iron.

Inside, some elements of the decorative scheme remain, but most internal finishes have been lost, and many walls are stripped to bare stone. There is a stone staircase with dado panelling and a cast-iron balustrade leading to the second floor, with a later timber stair added to access the third floor. The principal rooms on the first floor have chimneypieces, and there are four-panel timber doors on the third floor, along with timber panelled shutters. The 18th-century entrance stairs are still visible beneath the later 19th-century porch addition.

The east wing, which was formerly the kitchen and laundry area, is in poor condition as of 2007. It has timber stairs leading to the first floor, remnants of limewash on the interior of the 18th-century quadrant wall, sandstone flags in the original section, and terracotta flags in the later addition. There are timber-boarded partitions, chimneypieces, and a metal-lined timber moth box.

The west wing is open to two storeys and has a timber partition; it is currently used as a workshop. A tall rubble wall encloses the courtyard area.
