Description
Kames Cottage is a mid to late 19th century single-storey, three-bay lodge designed in an L-plan with a single-storey addition at the rear. The building is constructed of squared and snecked yellow rubble sandstone, featuring yellow sandstone ashlar dressings. It has a raised base course, an architraved string course, a polished frieze beneath corniced eaves, a crenellated parapet, and crowstepped gables. The quoins are tooled yellow sandstone, with tooled long and short surrounds to the openings, chamfered reveals, and sandstone mullions. The rear addition is harled, with polished long and short dressings.
On the south elevation, there is a timber panelled door offset to the right of centre, with an architraved hoodmould above it. To the right of the door is a single window. The outer left features a three-light canted window beneath the gabled bay, topped with a tapering finial. There is a stylised cruciform gunloop in a rectangular panel in the bay recessed to the outer right.
The west elevation has a single window offset to the left of centre on the original lodge, and another single window centred beneath the advanced gabled addition to the outer left. The original lodge has lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the addition features 6-pane timber casement glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, has crowstepped skews, and includes replacement rainwater goods. A coped ridge stack is located at the centre, with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
The boundary walls, gatepiers, and gates consist of a rubble-coped, random rubble wall that encloses the site. Splayed rubble walls flank the entrance and feature crenellated parapets. There are square-plan sandstone ashlar piers on the outer left and right, topped with pyramidal caps. Stop-chamfered, square-plan ashlar piers with crenellated parapets flank both the vehicular and pedestrian entrances. Decorative wrought iron gates with heraldic shields are centred in the entrances, although the pedestrian gate is missing.
