Description

Cardross Manse is an earlier 19th-century building that underwent later alterations by James Honeyman between 1869 and 1870, with further changes made in 1897. This two-storey gabled Tudorbethan manse has a rectangular plan and is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone, featuring ashlar margins and dressings. It has a base course and an eaves course.

The southeast elevation has four bays that are asymmetrically arranged. An advanced gable in the penultimate bay to the right creates a three-bay L-plan elevation, with a fourth slightly advanced piend-roofed bay on the outer right. The outer left bay is blank, with a blind arrowslit at ground level and a corbelled wallhead stack that breaks the eaves. There is a gabled porch in the re-entrant angle to the left of centre, which extends beyond the gable to the right. The porch features a Tudor-arched entrance with a panelled door and a carved ribbon in the gablehead, along with a Tudor-arched window on the left return. The skews and skewputts are finished with ashlar coping. Above the porch, there is a narrow window at the first floor. The broad gable to the right has a wider window at ground level and another window at the first floor, along with windows on both floors of the outer right bay.

The southwest elevation is near-symmetrically arranged with two bays and features an M-gable. There is a gabled single-storey block that is recessed on the left side. A full-height canted wing is present, with a blocking course at the centre of the right gable. The left gable slightly projects and has a bipartite window at ground level, a stepped blocking course, and a window at the first floor.

On the northwest elevation, there is a single-storey gabled wing that is off-centre to the right at ground level, with a window on the right return. To the left of centre, there are two windows at the first floor and a window at ground level on the outer left.

The northeast elevation is finished with harled and wet dash and features a single-storey wing. The windows throughout the building include plate glass timber sash and case windows on the southwest elevation, and 4-pane over 8-lying-pane timber sash and case windows on the entrance and other elevations. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and the building has ashlar coping to the skews and skewputts, as well as ashlar coped wallhead stacks.

The boundary walls, gates, and gatepiers consist of sandstone gatepiers with stop-chamfered arrises and pyramidal caps. There is a pedestrian gate to the outer left and cast-iron gates. The curved stugged sandstone walls are topped with ashlar saddleback coping.
