Description

The Old Corn Mill in Cardross dates back to 1818, with later additions. Originally designed in an L-plan layout, it has been modified to an approximate T-plan, with a warehouse that now serves as a garage attached to the southeast. The building is constructed of rubble, featuring some harl-pointing and later cement pointing.

On the southwest side, there is a piend-roofed jamb that is advanced off-centre to the left, made of coursed rubble and situated on sloping ground with a battered western corner. A modern plate glass window is located directly under the eaves, and there is a wooden forestair leading to a door on the right return. The left return has three openings at ground level, with two windows blocked on the outer right and a garage door to the left. There is a block recessed to the outer left, featuring a narrow door at the centre ground, a window at the first floor directly under the eaves to the right, and a multi-paned blocked window, along with a cast-iron rooflight.

The warehouse, recessed to the outer right, has an enlarged door and an iron beam at the centre, with two cast-iron rooflights symmetrically placed. The southeast elevation features an M-gable, with a blank gable to the outer left and a gable to the right that has a blocked opening at ground level and another blocked opening at the centre in the gablehead.

On the northeast elevation, the main range of the mill is largely blank and situated on falling ground to the north, with a single-storey warehouse wing attached on higher ground to the outer left. There are two cast-iron rooflights symmetrically disposed. The gable is constructed of rubble at the upper stages, with droved red sandstone ashlar used for the wheel outshot. Joist sockets from a former lean-to roof are visible. The wheel remains in situ, featuring a cast-iron overshot design, although the paddles are missing. There is a window off-centre to the left in the gable, flanked by two narrow openings. To the right of the block, there is a window at ground level on the outer right and another cast-iron rooflight.
