Description
Blackwood Cottage, built in the later 19th century, is an asymmetrical, single-storey cottage with an attic, designed in an L-shape and featuring single-storey additions at the rear. The exterior is constructed from harl-pointed rubble sandstone, accented with polished yellow sandstone dressings. It has a raised base course and crowstepped gables, with stugged rubble quoins and stugged long and short surrounds around the openings, as well as projecting cills.
On the northeast elevation, the entrance features a part-glazed timber panelled door set in an advanced, gabled surround, accompanied by a bipartite fanlight. To the outer left, there is a single window, while the outer right has a 3-light canted window that sweeps up to the gable. At the crowstepped apex, a narrow, pointed-arched window is centrally located.
The northwest elevation includes an advanced gabled wing to the left of centre, which has single windows at ground level in two bays on the outer left and right, with a single window in the apex above. To the right, there is a recessed wing with a single window off-set to the right of centre, and a piended addition that is recessed further to the outer right.
The cottage features 6-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with a grey slate roof that has crowstepped skews and replacement rainwater goods. The chimney stacks at the apex are corniced, with both square-plan and circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
