Description

16 Craigmore Road is a mid-19th century house, built around 1853, with alterations made in 1944. This two-storey, four-bay classical style house features a grouped layout of 1-2-1, with a recessed central section and a single-storey piended entrance porch set back to the outer left. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked tooled yellow sandstone, with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings. It has a raised base course and overhanging eaves with a modillioned cornice. The house also has droved yellow sandstone quoins and long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, along with projecting cills.

The entrance elevation includes a replacement two-leaf glazed door in the centre of the recessed porch, topped by a six-light replacement fanlight and a roll-moulded, shouldered-arch surround. There are three-light canted windows on both floors in the advanced bay to the outer left, and a similar three-light canted window at ground level in the advanced bay to the outer right, which features an intricate cast-iron balcony above. The central recessed bays contain single windows on both floors in the bay offset to the left of centre, and bipartite windows on both floors in the bays offset to the right. A stylised cast-iron pilaster forms a verandah at ground level, while timber pilasters support a bracketed balcony at the first floor, which is adorned with a decorative timber balustrade.

The house has small-pane timber glazing throughout and is topped with graded grey slate piends. The north and south sides have coped wallhead stacks with octagonal cans.

Inside, the house remains relatively intact, featuring extensive timber panelling and a timber balustraded stair.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of a round-arched rubble coping on a harl-pointed rubble wall along Craigmore Road. Curved, coursed sandstone walls flank the entrance, with stop-chamfered square-plan piers topped with whitewashed pyramidal caps and cast-iron vehicular access gates.
